What is ADA sink?
ADA refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act, which aims to prohibit discrimination on the disabled. ADA sinks are sinks which are specially designed based on the act so as to help people with limited mobility to use a sink. ADA sinks are commonly seen in places such as schools, shopping malls, restaurants, and so on. They can also be used in private residences.
What are the requirements for ADA sinks?
Height
The ADA sinks, whether for bathrooms or kitchens, should be no higher than 34 inches off the floor.
Depth
The ADA sinks should be shallower so as to allow space for knee clearance underneath.
Clearance space
Clearance space is needed to enable the wheelchair to move freely. The knee clearance under the sink should be at least 27 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 19 inches deep.
Faucet
There are also guidelines for the height of the faucet. The faucet should not be mounted over 48 inches above the floor if the sink space has a depth of 20 inches or less, no more than 44 inches if 20-25 inches. Besides, the faucet should be easy to turn on, hands-free faucets are better than traditional faucets.
